Japan visa for Indians: the eVisa process, documents and fees

A short tourist visa for Japan is not hard to get from India — it is a document exercise. Here is the order to do it in, what actually gets checked, and where files fall over.

01Official channel

Apply through the official channel

Indian passport holders need a visa before travelling. Short tourist trips are applied for either as a Japan eVisa online, or through the visa application centre appointed by the Embassy and Consulates of Japan in India.

Japan eVisa (online)

Official government portal

Digital certificate, no sticker in the passport, applied from India for short single-entry tourism.

Embassy / Consulate of Japan in India

Authority that issues the visa

Publishes the current forms, fee schedule, jurisdiction by state and the appointed application-centre arrangement.

Appointed visa application centre

Document submission and biometrics where required

Handles submission on the mission's behalf and charges a service fee on top of the consular fee.

Travel agencies can prepare and submit paperwork for you, and some also sell rail passes — useful, but they are not the issuing authority and their handling arrangements change. Start from the official pages.

05Refusals

Why files get rejected

  • Bank balance appears days before applying, with no explanation of the source.
  • Itinerary and bookings disagree — a hotel in Osaka on a night the plan says Kyoto.
  • Income-tax returns missing, or income that cannot support the stated trip.
  • No credible reason to return: no leave letter, no business, no dependents.
  • Sponsorship claimed without a covering letter or relationship proof.
  • Form details that do not match the passport or the supporting documents.
06Questions

What Indian applicants ask

Do Indians need a visa for Japan in 2026?

Yes. Indian passport holders need a visa before travelling; Japan has no visa-on-arrival for India. Short tourist trips are covered by a single-entry temporary-visitor visa, applied for either as an eVisa or through the appointed visa application centre.

What is the Japan eVisa and can Indians use it?

The eVisa is an online temporary-visitor visa issued as a digital certificate you show at check-in and immigration — nothing is pasted in your passport. It is available to Indian tourists applying from India for short single-entry visits; longer, multiple-entry or non-tourist categories still go through the regular process.

How long does a Japan visa take for Indian applicants?

Plan on 5–10 working days from a complete submission, longer around Golden Week, Obon and New Year, and longer again if the consulate asks for extra documents. Apply about four to six weeks before departure — early enough to be safe, not so early that your bank statements go stale.

How much does a Japan visa cost from India?

The consular fee for a single-entry temporary-visitor visa is a small amount — indicatively ₹500–₹900 — plus the visa application centre's service charge, so most applicants pay roughly ₹1,500–₹2,500 all in. Fees are revised periodically; confirm the current figure on the official schedule when you apply.

What documents do Indians need for a Japan tourist visa?

Passport with two blank pages and six months validity, the completed application form, a recent photo to specification, confirmed flight and hotel bookings, a day-by-day itinerary, six months of bank statements, income-tax returns for the last two or three years, and employment or business proof. Students and dependents add a sponsor's documents plus a covering letter.

Why do Japan visa applications from India get rejected?

The common causes are thin or unexplained bank balances, an itinerary that does not match the bookings, missing income-tax returns, weak proof of ties to India, unclear sponsorship, and inconsistencies between the form and the supporting papers. A clean, coherent file matters more than a large balance.
