Same chain, same price, no crowd

The rule is simple: chains price identically nationwide, so there is never a reason to shop a chain in a tourist district. Walk one stop out and the same shelf is quiet.

Tax-free, cash and timing

Tax-free: Carry your passport. Tax-free applies over ¥5,000 in one store on the same day. Until 31 Oct 2026 the tax is deducted at the till; for purchases from 1 Nov 2026 you pay in full and claim the tax back on departure. Keep purchases available for inspection until you have cleared the customs check at the airport.
Points: Bic and Yodobashi point cards are worth taking for a big electronics purchase, but points and tax-free are usually an either/or on the same item — ask first.
Cash: Vintage, market streets and small independents still prefer cash. Withdraw at 7-Eleven; foreign cards work reliably there.
Timing: Department stores open at 10:00-11:00 and close at 20:00. Kappabashi closes early. Nakano is best on a weekday.
Luggage: Ship purchases to your next hotel with a takkyubin counter instead of dragging bags through Shinjuku Station.

How tax-free works depends on your shopping date

Until 31 October 2026 the tax comes off in the shop. For purchases from 1 November 2026 you pay the full price and claim the consumption tax back on departure.

Buying before 1 November 2026 — deducted at the shop

How it works

Show your passport at the till or the store's tax-free counter. Minimum spend is ¥5,000 in one store on the same day.
Consumption tax is deducted from the price you pay, so you walk out having paid the tax-free amount.
Your purchase record is filed electronically against your passport — there is no paper slip to staple in anymore at most stores.
Department stores and big electronics chains run dedicated counters; smaller shops deduct at the register.

At the airport

You are buying tax-free on the basis that the goods leave Japan with you.
Keep purchases available for inspection until you have cleared the customs check — if an officer wants to see an item, it must not already be inside checked baggage you can no longer reach.
If you are checking a large purchase, complete any customs verification before you drop the bag, not after.
Customs can and does spot-check the electronic purchase record on exit.
