Haneda is ≈18 km out: Keikyu or the Monorail put you central in 30–55 min for ¥330–680. Narita is ≈60 km out in Chiba: the Narita Express runs to Tokyo Station in 55–95 min for ≈¥3,070, the Keisei Skyliner reaches Nippori/Ueno in 41–75 min for ≈¥2,580, and the Limousine Bus takes 75–140 min to hotel doors. Load ¥5,000 on the IC card and no small movement becomes a decision again.

Don't compare every Tokyo hotel against every other hotel. Start at Otemon Gate when the East Gardens open (closed Mon/Fri — check before you build the day around it). Then the Palace-side walk from Marunouchi toward Hibiya: wide pavements, moat, pine courtyards. This is the cleanest, calmest version of Tokyo and the reason first-timers should base in Chiyoda or Chuo.

Nihombashi in daylight: Mitsukoshi's honten (the original department store, food basement is a museum of gifting), Coredo complexes, the bridge itself with the highway above it. Calmer and better connected than people realise.

Late afternoon is Ginza's best light. Do the heritage stores (Mitsukoshi Ginza, Matsuya), then flagships. Enter via the great torii at Harajuku side; the gravel avenue under the forest canopy is the point — 60–75 minutes is right. Bow once at the torii, wash hands at the temizuya, and keep voices low near the main shrine.

Takeshita Street is a 15-minute look, not a morning. Omotesando is where to actually spend two hours: the zelkova avenue, architecture flagships (Prada, Dior, Omotesando Hills), and the back streets of Aoyama for design and calmer fashion.

Little Nap Coffee Stand — the small one by the park: relaxed, excellent, exactly right after the Omotesando walk. Then a slow half hour in Yoyogi Park itself.

The crossing is 20 minutes — do it once at street level, once from above. Shibuya Sky: book the sunset slot online days ahead (it sells out); the open-air deck at golden hour with Fuji on a clear evening is the best paid view in Tokyo. Visit Shibuya; don't sleep in the loudest core.

Twenty minutes at the Hakone Shrine 'floating' torii and lakefront, then board the first published sailing to Togendai (25–35 min, upper/open deck; there's no single best side). Buy the one-way cruise (¥1,700) + ropeway return (¥3,000) separately — the ¥5,000 unlimited combo is NOT cheaper for this route.

Check today's official Odakyu highway-bus timetable for Gotemba → Busta Shinjuku on your travel date and reserve a seat — weekday, weekend and seasonal timetables all differ, and the last departure is earlier than most people expect. Budget 1 h 40 min to 2 h 20 min for the ride, more on a Sunday evening. Sit left if selectable for a final Fuji angle. Do not add another big plan this evening.

Kaminarimon gate → Nakamise Street (open from ~9:00; browse on the way in, buy on the way out) → the main hall and five-storey pagoda. Draw an omikuji fortune (¥100); a bad one gets tied to the rack, not carried home. Tourist Tokyo is around Senso-ji; everyday Tokyo is two streets away.

The professional kitchen street: hand-forged knives (they'll engrave while you wait — a genuinely great gift), fake-food models, ceramics by the crate. Most shops shut by 17:00 and several close Sundays — that's why it's a mid-morning stop.

The large park just north of Akihabara: Tokyo National Museum (best single museum in Japan — 90 minutes on the Honkan highlights floor is enough), the lotus pond at Shinobazu, the shrine lanterns. Museums take last entry ~16:30, close 17:00 — sequence matters.

The headline district for anime and electronics at full neon. Yodobashi Akiba for new watches/electronics under one roof (compare models, points, tax-free in one stop). Spend the IC balance down first: a regular Suica or PASMO can be refunded at the issuing operator's counter minus a handling fee, but Welcome Suica and PASMO PASSPORT are visitor cards with no balance refund at all.
